Chapter 17

Storm

“Can you believe that dumb bitch?” I seethe.

Kendra just walks ahead of me, surveying my place for the first time and probably coming away with a big fat zero.

I'm not much of a decorator.

I head to the one recliner I own and ease my ass into it, thinking about karma and how payback is a bitch. Having a bunch of bruised ribs makes me think of Candi, Viper's wife and former FBI player.

I broke one of hers. Yup. A teeny bit of empathy creeps in.

Fuck, it's tender.

Shifting my weight, I see Kendra and get that horrible feeling again. But it's also great.

And I can't fucking deny the feels. I'm stuck with them. With her.

One thing I don't like is that I can't defend her at the moment. Got my head nearly wrapped around a telephone pole.

It's a fucking miracle I decided to wear the brain bucket for the last ride. Force of habit from my years as a fed.

Lots of the brothers don't wear helmets, though it's illegal. Not that we give a fuck.

Kendra unbuttons her jacket, showing off her hot figure, and I get half a boner despite everything that just happened—the weird old broad coming by my house and telling me she was a relative and an avoidable accident that nearly rearranged my face and did total my ride.

Kendra walks back and smiles, handing me a glass of water. Then she scans the townhouse.

“You don't have any place else to sit.” As soon as the words leave her mouth, she realizes what that says about me—no friends, no family, no girlfriend.

But pity doesn't reach Kendra's gold eyes. Instead, she lowers herself to her haunches and grabs the hand not holding the water.

“I'm going to spend your money making this place look good.”

I crack a smile. “Nah. There's nothing wrong with it.”

Noose pipes in, “A fucking lie if ever one was told.”

When I shoot him a sideways glare, he chuckles. “I mean, there's bachelor pads, then there's sterile. This fucking place?” His eyes sweep the TV and the chair I'm sitting in then come back to my face. “Damn.”

Kendra lays her face against my hand, and I card my fingers through her loose spiral curls.

“Yeah. Don't spend a lot of time here so never thought a spruce-up was a thing I needed to worry about.”

Noose says nothing, walking to my fridge and opening the door. He peers inside, sees day-old milk and a six pack of bottled beer, and closes it.

Faster than I can track he's on his cell, tapping out something.

“What are you doing?”

He flips me off, and I chuckle.

Classic Noose.

He shoves his cell into the pocket of his cut and gives me a look. “Pizza's coming, Martha Stewart.”

Detangling my fingers from Kendra's hair, I shoot up my middle finger then groan when the action sends pain rioting to my gonads. Fuck.

Kendra stands. I want to beg her to stay, but I don't.

“Where you going, babe?”

She smiles at me, and I swear the expression affects me like the sun warming my face.
